Feeding Jamaica

On behalf of Great Worx Inc., I am pleased to submit this proposal seeking a grant of $40,000 to support a critical food-security initiative in southwestern Jamaica. Our project will produce, ship, store, and distribute 160,000 nutritious meals (equivalent to approximately 133,335 pounds of cooked food) through our facility in Revival, Jamaica and our Mobile Medical Infrastructure (MMI) systems.

We believe the goals and vision of your foundation align directly with our commitment to sustainable nutritional relief and community resilience in a disaster. We request your permission to submit a full proposal for your review.

Thank you for considering our request.

Great Worx Inc., proposes a targeted food-relief program in the south-western region of Jamaica, intended to purchase, ship, and distribute 160,000 meals (via 26,667 bags packaged into 740 cases) at a cost of $40,000 for meal production ($0.25 per meal). The overarching request to the foundation is $40,000 per shipment, which will cover production, shipping, warehousing, local distribution, operational overhead, volunteer coordination, and program monitoring. Our Revival facility in Jamaica will act as the central warehouse and primary distribution center, complemented by our MMI systems for mobile delivery and integrated service events (health, dental, vision). Our shipments should plan to be quarterly and we would like to see monthly shipments occur as the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa is sorted out. We understand that at some point the need will slack off as the country of Jamaica recovers.

The project will reach under-served children and families in the south-western parishes, deliver high-nutrient meals at scale, and integrate monitoring and evaluation via nutritionist-led check-ins and clinic-day distributions. With the foundation’s support, we’ll build a sustainable model that can be repeated, scaled, and supported through local partnerships and in-kind resources.

Jamaica is highly vulnerable to food-security shocks. When a Category 5 hurricane — Melissa — strikes, it severely disrupts the food supply chain: port closures, destruction of roads, loss of crops, power outages across all sectors, and increased food imports lead to price spikes and scarcity. Additionally, in the south-western parishes of Jamaica, many families are already facing moderate to severe food insecurity, with children and single-parent households being especially at risk.

In the region we serve, families often skip meals; children come to school hungry; local relief agencies are stretched thin. By delivering 133,33531,471 pounds of cooked-equivalent food (via 40,000 meals), our project addresses this urgent need directly. We would love to be able to use our Revival facility and mobile delivery model ensure responsiveness, particularly when natural disasters further compromise food access.

  • Goal 1: Deliver 160,000 meals to families and children in the south-western parishes of Jamaica within the first 3 months following grant receipt.
  • Goal 2: Utilize our a robust distribution network using our Revival facility and MMI systems, coordinating with local schools, clinics, and parish leaders to reach under-served communities.
  • Goal 3: If wanted, monitor nutritional and operational outcomes, achieving at least 75% participation in nutrition-check activities and capturing trend data on key indicators.
  • Goal 4: Develop a sustainable program model by leveraging in-kind resources, local partnerships, and volunteer networks, positioning the initiative for ongoing funding beyond the initial grant.

Production & Shipping:

Meals will be produced in the U.S. at the cost of $0.25 per meal, resulting in 160,000 meals for $40,000. Meals will be packaged in 6-meal bags, 36 bags per case, totaling 740 cases (26667 bags), which when cooked yield approximately 133,335 pounds of food.

Storage & Distribution:

Our facility in Revival, Jamaica will serve as the central storage and primary distribution hub. From there, mobile units using our Mobile Medical Infrastructure (MMI) systems will deliver meals to schools, clinics, and community centers throughout the south-western parishes. Distribution will be coordinated on clinic days (medical/dental/vision) to reduce stigma and increase participation.

Key Personnel:

Paddy Shannon, Director/Secretary – 15+ years of non-profit work in Jamaica

Flora Shannon, Director/President – 15+ years of non-profit work in Jamaica

Tim Thomas, Director/Vice President – 15+ years of non-profit work in Jamaica

 Randy Burba, Director – 15+ years of non-profit work in Jamaica

Implementation Timeline:

  • Month 1–2: Finalize meal production & shipping schedule; ready Revival facility; Advise local partnerships.
  • Month 3–4: Receive shipment; process and inventory; set up mobile units; training of volunteers.
  • Month 5–12: Conduct distribution events, coordinate with schools/clinics, engage nutritionist for monitoring visits as needed.

We will track the following key performance indicators (KPIs):

– Number of meals distributed (target: 160,000);

– Pounds of food delivered (target: ~133,335 lbs cooked equivalent);

– Number of families/children served;

– Participation rate in nutrition-check events (target ≥ 75%);

– Trends in observable indicators (BMI, skin/eye nutrition proxies) measured by a consulting nutritionist;

– Parent/guardian satisfaction rates via simple surveys;

– Efficiency metrics (cost per meal, cost per family served);

Data will be collected at each mobile distribution event and clinic day; results will be aggregated quarterly and a full evaluation report produced at 12 months.

We are requesting $40,000 for each shipment. The budget breakdown is as follows:

– Meal production (160,000 meals @ $0.25) = $40,000

– Shipping from U.S. to Jamaica, customs, freight = $4500

– Warehousing, handling at Revival facility = $500

– Mobile distribution operations (MMI units, fuel, staffing, coordination) = $350

– Monitoring & evaluation (nutritionist contract, data collection) = $1000

– Volunteer training and administrative overhead = $500

In-kind and committed resources already include:

– Use of our Revival facility as storage and staging ground;

– Deployment of our MMI systems (owned and operated by Great Worx);

– Volunteer teams in the U.S. and Jamaica for food handling and delivery;

– Established partnerships for discounted shipping and customs assistance.

Great Worx Inc. is a registered nonprofit organization with a mission to deliver sustainable humanitarian relief and community development programs in Jamaica. Our leadership team (Paddy Shannon, Flora Shannon, Tim Thomas, Randy Burba) each bring over fifteen years of experience working within Jamaican non-profits, managing logistics, coordinating volunteers, and delivering impact in challenging environments.

Our facility in Revival, Jamaica serves as our regional hub — enabling us to own warehouse and staging capacity, maintain mobile infrastructure (MMI systems), and collaborate with local schools, clinics, parish leaders, and volunteers.

In conclusion, this proposal represents a targeted, large-scale, and sustainable effort to combat food insecurity for children and families in the south-western region of Jamaica. With your support of some part of $40,000, we will deliver 160,000 meals, engage communities, monitor outcomes, and build a model for future impact. We welcome the opportunity to provide any further documentation you may require—proof of charitable status, full budgets, financial statements, governance policies—and to answer any questions your grants committee may have.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to the possibility of partnering with you to bring meaningful, measurable change.
